Newburyport – Mission Oak Grill
Recommended by Ann Marie Salmon, SalmonTeam.com
A fabulous restaurant with warm and friendly bartenders ..like Celine and Anthony. A delicious, variety of appetizers are 1/2 price from 5-7, Mon. thru Fri. as well as some great wines. Mission Oak Grill, 26 Green Street, Newburyport – 978.463.9009

Amesbury – Phat Cats Bistro
Recommended by Ann Olmstead, Ann Olmstead.com
The most delightful bistro style restaurant in the area. The bar is relaxed and Christine (one of the owners) mixes amazing drinks with great panache. The food is absolutely delicious, with all the vegetables and fruits being fresh from Heron Pond Farm up the road. Christine also makes the desserts, and her husband, Paul is the Chef. They support the community immeasurably. They have allowed my daughter Emily to hold several fundraisers for the PanMass Challenge there, and they have been successful and happy evenings. By the way – “Take out” is amazing. This summer, food for 27 for an impromtu family reunion was provided almost instantly and delivered up the street to my daughter’s! Thank you to Christine and Paul for having come to Amesbury and for giving us all so much here and to the surrounding towns!”

So. Hampton, NH – Heron Pond Farm
Recommended by Ann Olmstead, Ann Olmstead.com
“The first that I learned about Heron Pond Farm was when a close family member and her best friend announced that they were “doing a CSA” two years ago at Heron Pond Farm. “What on earth is that?” I responded!! Well thank goodness we all know that term now. I am paid in kind for babysitting my grandchild. Gorgeous fresh fruits and vegetables have come my way.

Heron Pond uses various sustainable methods and in addition to being able to pick up one’s share at the stand, they drop off shares in both Dover and Portsmouth. The second winter share was: 1 lb. carrots, 2 lbs. potatoes, 6 apples,1 kohlrabi, 2 stalks Brussels Sprouts, 2 winter squash, 3 onions,1 garlic and 1 bunch Swiss chard. How sweet is this?! I thoroughly recommend a ride up the country road to the Farm!”

West Newbury – Mill Pond Recreation Area
Recommended by Deb Hamilton, DeborahHamilton.com
A favorite hidden gem, well known to local dog lovers and the best local site for walkers, families, riders and fishermen. The well marked trails leave the parking lot in the lower field pass butterfly fields, a wide hayfield and wind through hardwood and piney woods, and along the edge of the pond. Unleashed dogs are welcome beyond the gates at the parking areas. There’s even a dog and horse wading beach separate from the dock and “people” beach. The Mill Pond Building was originally a summer camp dining hall. The west-facing benches on covered porch offer witness to some spectacular sunsets across the serene Mill Pond. Across the street is the Riverbend Conservation Area, winding all the way from Page School to the Merrimack.

Both areas are well marked, and maps can be obtained through Essex County Trail Assn and West Newbury Open Space. Developed and maintained by volunteers from both organizations, the trails at Mill Pond and Riverbend offer hours of pleasure and exercise to man and beast.
